Trogon County....for the birders, by the birders !!! It's a small and beautiful dream of few birding enthusiasts translated into reality by creating a facility for themselves and the fast growing birding /bird photographer's fraternity to stay in the lap of nature in Thattekkad, Kerala. Thattekkad requires no introduction to the birders as it is one of the most prominent birding hotpots in the world with about 350 species recorded. Trogon County shares it's boundary with the Periyar river catchment on one side and a reserve forest on the other. It is also very close to the famous Salim Ali Bird sanctuary. This thoughtfully made comfortable accommodation is really the place for any birder to start the day. Birds like Drongos (Grater racket tailed, Ashy, Bronzed, Black), Barbets (Malabar, white cheeked, Brown headed), Orioles ( Golden, Black naped, Black Hooded), Hornbills, Woodpeckers (Streak throated, Rufous, Heart spotted, Black rumped and Greater Flameback), Swallows, Treepies ( Rufous, White bellied), Parakeets, Mynas (Common, Hill, Jungle), Starlings ( Chestnut Tailed, Malabar, Brahminy), Grey Jungle fowl, Red Spurfowl, Water Birds (Terns, Little cormorants, Egrets, Water hens, Herons, Lesser whistling ducks, Moorhens and others), Kingfishers, Flycatchers among many more species of birds are regularly spotted naturally on the property and in the lush green reserve forest around. Over 150 species have been recorded within a radius of 800 m of Trogon County (as logged by ebird.com). For the more adventurous ones, walks in the deep forest next to the property are available to spot the more elusive and shy birds. Trips to the Idamalyar Forest range can also arranged.
