Activities

One of the most exciting and fun things to do in Kovalam is to experience the thrilling water sports and beach adventure. Swimming, surfing, parasailing, jet-skiing, and paragliding are just a few of the activities available. The Lighthouse Beach is the buzzing zone that sets the ground for all these activities. Kovalam Beach is a haven for adventure seekers, with a good variety of water sports. It is one of the best places to experience the rush and adventure of water activities, which take the adventurer in you on a thrilling ride. Besides, the beaches of Kovalam offers you a perfect spot for a relaxing swim.

Travellers can go out on a wooden boat ride at the main beach of Kovalam. The wooden boat ride takes the travellers out on the ocean on a traditional Catamaran. Experienced local fishermen row these ancient boats using a bamboo paddle. One of the best ways to get a rush of adrenaline is to go speedboating in Kovalam. The ride, taking about 20 minutes, lets the travellers enjoy the beauty of the shoreline in all its grandeur. Large waves and high speeds make speedboating a thrilling experience that one may become dizzy from the thrills.

The landscape of Kovalam features pristine beaches with golden sands surrounded by rows of green palm groves, making it perfect for photoshoots. Though less crowded than Goa, this small coastal town has beautiful beaches that offer stunning panoramic views. The rocky coasts and calm waters of Kovalam make it a perfect location for photoshoots amid nature's beauty. Vellayani Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. The lake environment abounds in flora and fauna, making its visit one of the must-do activities in Kovalam. A boat ride lets one explore this scenic and beautiful lake. The vibrant sunset in this one-of-a-kind ecosystem is a sight to behold. Another thing to do in Kovalam is to explore the gorgeous Karamana River which originates from the Western Ghats. You can take a boating tour of the river which will take you through the expansive green tropical plants. The river is surrounded by lush greens.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave, located 1 km from Kovalam in the seaside village of Vizhinjam, is a historic site. The rock-cut sculptures in this cave date back to the eighth century. The cave houses a temple dedicated to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. This granite cave temple follows the Tamil style of architecture. The cave's outer wall features an unfinished sculpture of Lord Shiva, dancing and holding a bow.

Snorkelling is best experienced in Kovalam from December to March when the sea is calm. There is no need for travellers to be worried about the dangers of the sea as there are professionals who ensure the safety of travellers and efficient operation of the activity. Snorkelling is not risky in Kovalam as the divers go down only 5 feet deep. Snorkelling is one of the most thrilling under-water activities as it is an example of how one can enjoy the underwater life of oceans with less effort. The only requirement to have fun and cherish the vibrancy and burst of colours under the water is that one must know how to swim. Snorkelling is safe in Kovalam and is a government-approved activity. Kovalam lets you taste the unique experience of the underwater world. .

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Kovalam Beach is a globally renowned beach located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Getting there is no hassle and is about 18 km from the capital city. It is better to stay in Kovalam if you wish to tour the city. Kovalam Beach has been a favourite hang-out of tourists since the 1930s. Stretching along the coastline of the Arabian Sea, Kovalam Beach has three adjacent crescent-shaped beaches, namely, Hawa Beach, Lighthouse Beach and Samudra Beach. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has formed a beautiful bay that is great for sea bathing. The beach is incredibly beautiful and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India for beachgoers.

Detailed Description

Kovalam Beach glistens under the sun with its pebbles, black sand, swaying coconut trees and waves crashing against the rocks and is known for its breathtaking scenery. Kovalam Beach, also known as Covelong Beach, draws travellers from all over the world. Kovalam has a fascinating historical background. It rose to prominence in 1920, when the Regent Maharani of Travancore, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, built the first beach resort known as the Halcyon Castle. With travellers flocking from all over the world, Kovalam started gaining popularity as a tourist destination. In the 1970s, hippies from Ceylon came to Kovalam, which catapulted it into the spotlight. Kovalam Beach offers a variety of water activities, herbal beach massage sessions, beach camping and several pocket-friendly cottages, convention centres, yoga facilities, and health resorts. Its proximity to some of the historically and culturally significant forts, temples, mosques, and churches make the place a perfect retreat for travellers.
