Safari is the best way to explore the wilderness of the park. The safari rounds start in the morning. This early morning admittance into the park ensures that the diurnal animals are not distracted during their sleep. During the 23 kilometres-long jungle safari, the assigned vehicles move at a slow pace and stop in between for the travellers to photograph. The animals of the park are difficult to be spotted. However, there are a 1050 metres high Watch Tower which offers a spectacular view of the park, thus making up for the former loss. The travellers can also walk down to Kunthi River to catch the sight of the hanging bridge. Wildlife safari is the highlight of the park as it offers an exciting opportunity to see the birds and animals of Silent Valley. The park also allows safari in the private vehicles of travellers provided they adhere to the guidelines and rules which ensure the safety of the travellers as well as the flora and fauna of the park. The canopy of the forest is thick and dense, giving it the appearance of a dark green carpet. The atmosphere of Silent Valley is unique owing to the scenery of luxuriant surroundings, chirping of birds and the misty breezes.

Some of the birds found in the area are Black Bulbul, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, Pale Harrier, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Red-Winged Crested Cuckoo, Long-legged Buzzard, Great Indian Hornbill, Ceylon Frogmouth, Nilgiri Pipit, Crimson-backed Sunbird, White-bellied Blue-flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Wayanad laughing thrush, Rufous Babbler, Broad-tailed Grassbird, Grey-headed Bulbul, White-bellied Treepie, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Malabar Parakeet and Nilgiri Wood Pigeon.

The travellers can take a short walk through the richness of the evergreen forest. The walking trails lead to a small and pristine river which has anchored boats tied to its banks. Silent Valley is enclosed by thick forests with a scattered cane. The dry leaf litter covering the forest during autumn is a notable feature of this biodiversity hotspot.

Silent Valley National Park is the abode of Butterflies and Odonates and is noted for its distinctive Lepidopteran Fauna. The park houses a large number of butterflies and moths. The park also serves as the final point of the yearly migration of butterflies from Coorg Hills and other areas of the Eastern and Western Ghats. A considerable number of butterflies of the Albatross species migrate to this park every winter and return by the end of it. Papilionidae and Nymphalidae are the butterfly families which contain a large number of species. These families have protected species as well as the species endemic to South India. Some species of butterflies migrate to the park in a mixed swarm of thousands.

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Silent Valley National Park is situated in the Nilgiri Hills of Kerala. The park, covering a large area of land, is encompassed by a buffer zone. The region was explored by the botanist, Robert Wight in 1847. The park is home to rare species of plants and animals. It is also a precious reservoir of rare herbs and other plants. The wildlife of the park is enriched with Lion-tailed Macaques, Elephants and the most common denizens, Tigers. Silent Valley National Park, positioned in the Kundali Hills of Western Ghats, is India last tropical evergreen forest with its characteristic virgin tracts. Although the park is smaller when compared to other national parks of India, Silent Valley has a unique ecosystem with its high peaks, rivers and the sylvan environment.

Detailed Description

Silent Valley National Park is the result of the movement of the people to preserve the last rainforest of Kerala. The region of the park under the Division forms the core zone. In 2007, a considerable area of land was added as a buffer zone to this Division. The Silent Valley Forests are also declared as Reserve Forests. Silent Valley which belonged to the South Malabar Division with Nilambur as its headquarters is now administrated by Palakkad Forest Division. It is the core of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. This unique tropical rain forest is noted for its pristine nature and the unimpaired ecological history. It is the country last virgin tract of tropical evergreen forests.
