Somawathiya National Park is situated in Gangapahalavila which is 266 km to the northeast of Colombo. It is one of the four national parks designated under the Mahaweli River development project. This national park is also important for its wildlife sanctuary containing many large herbivores. It also has a historic and religious background as it is the resting place of a relic of Lord Buddha.
